SAFETY4TMF project partners study modern methods for managing mining waste facilities in Košice

Representatives of the Harghita County Council also took part in a two-day professional study visit organized on 18–19 June in Košice and its surroundings within the framework of the SAFETY4TMF project. On this occasion, project partners explored best practices, monitoring systems, and innovative solutions related to the safe management of tailings facilities, while also exchanging experiences on risk prevention measures.

The professional programme began with presentations on the activities of the Via Carpatia EGTC and the objectives of the SAFETY4TMF project in the Košice region. This was followed by a field visit to a closed tailings facility located in the Slovinky–Bodnárec area. On-site, participants were introduced to the structural risks associated with dams built from mining waste, the environmental hazards posed by heavy metals present in the deposits, as well as the functioning of technical supervision and monitoring systems.

During the visit, methods used for geodetic measurements and for assessing groundwater and seepage flow were also presented, along with the water management strategy aimed at ensuring controlled passage of precipitation through the facility, thereby reducing pressure on the dam structures.

On the second day, project partners became familiar with the research activities of the Technical University of Košice, with a particular focus on geotechnologies, waste recycling, and mining tourism. The programme concluded with a presentation by the Košice Self-Governing Region on its regional strategies for safety and environmental protection, as well as practical applications of the KSK Geoportal.

As part of the SAFETY4TMF project, the Harghita County Council also places strong emphasis on informing the public. In this context, the publication “What to do? – In case of a tailings facility accident” was developed, providing practical guidance for emergency situations. The publication and further information about the project are available on the website of the Harghita County Council:
